Primary Needs: Learning About Food Security


The Concept of Food Security:
When all people at any time have access to sufficient, nutritious and safe food to keep a healthy life.
A person, household or community, nation or region is food secure when all members at all times have physical and economic access to buy, produce, obtain or consume sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy and active life.
The 3 pillars that supports food security:
  • Food Available: Enough quantities of food that is available all the time.
  • Food access: always have sufficient resources to obtain foods for nutrition.
  • Food use: According to basic knowledge of nutrition and care, we need to decide the appropriate usage.
Food security is an important topic, nowadays, there are still lots of debates:
  • Food in the future needs can or cannot be met by current levels of production
  • National food security is expected to be paramount or should be no longer necessary as the results of global trade.
  • Globalization may or may not lead to the persistence of food insecurity and poverty in rural communities.
